The Romanian company ARCA (Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association) announced that it will first attempt to send a robot to the moon to compete with Google Lunar X Prize.

Robot Lunar private

The award was launched in September 2007 and promised $ 30 million for the first mission to land on the Moon makes a robot that is capable of walking by at least 500 meters and transmit images to Earth (see Google launches prize for that team to send robot to the moon).

The first private mission to the Moon should be launched in the next 3 months. The launch will take place from a balloon to 18 km in altitude. The mission was named Mission4-ELL, and ELL the name of the robotic probe - an acronym for European Lunar Lander.

Launching a balloon

The robotic vehicle weighs 42 kilograms and vai land in a controlled manner using a retrofoguete. This rocket is equipped with a tank under pressure, which injects the fuel in the combustion chamber, which makes it capable of being switched off and on again.

The rocket Stabilo, three stages, will be launched from a balloon. According to ARCA, the flight to the Moon will take 116 hours.

Robot moved by rocket

Instead a small robot with wheels or legs, the company has chosen the simplest approach seems technologically. The probe descends retrofoguetes and is using its lunar soil in capturing images and data for a few moments.

Then the rockets are triggered again, leading it to a distance sufficient to meet the requirement of the award, which states that the probe should be around for at least 500 meters, without clarifying the means of locomotion. She lands and capture new images and data, which will be sent to Earth.

To do this first attempt to win the X Prize Lunar Google, the ARCA joined the Pablo De Leon and Associates. The two companies were competing when they participated in the Ansari X Prize.
