Milky Way is more beautiful than you imagined

Filed Under (Space) by admin on 21-07-2008

Our most modern telescopes allow us to see directly million galaxies. But they are not able to shoot our Milky Way by the simple fact that we are within it. Now, scientists using the latest astronomical discoveries to create a “talking picture” of our own galaxy.

The result is a beauty that impressed even those who are accustomed to shooting daily dazzling galaxies in many different formats.

Yin and Yang galácticos

“Our galaxy is not as confusing as many thought. What we found was evidence of balance and order, as the yin and yang of Chinese philosophy,” says Tom astrofísico Dame.

The Milky Way has 400 billion stars. Most of them and much of the gas that spreads among them are concentrated in large arms forming a spiral around the center of the galaxy.

Recent Discoveries

Recently, astronomers discovered that the Milky Way had less mass than had been calculated so far (see Milky Way has lost weight equivalent to a trillion suns) and discovered a new spiral arm on the other side of his heart, for the position where our Solar System is.

Taking into account these and other recent discoveries, the new “talking picture” of our galaxy shows a beautiful symmetry, with two spiral arms gently spreading from its center, as shown by the artistic design, created by Robert Hurt.
